Drawings from Hong Kong


























































In Hong Kong as elsewhere, words such as Posh, Style and Quality are used in a kind of double bluff, as though the word itself transformed the object - I say Posh therefore I am. The word Style is strewn across a T'Shirt in a market known for it's fakes. Here the western word is used in place of the signs of quality that we would normally use to recognise style or value; workmanship, price, limited availability. So English words become a kind of lowest denominator. At one point a woman simply said to Will 'Buy something'. English becomes the sign while for me all Chinese characters are like graphic signs themselves...
